dRMM’s Alex de Rijke has always wanted a large round laminated dining table. He is known for pioneering innovative uses of timber within the construction industry and together with young furniture makers Barnby and Day, applied this thinking to the table, making it from 30 layers of cross laminated tulipwood resulting in a hollow table that looks solid but is incredibly light for its size.

The making challenge was due to the sheer size of the table.  We had to bring in a special lathe to the workshop which was bolted to the floor and needed to be rewired to run more slowly due to the sheer size of the pieces.  The turning of the central bowl was particularly difficult due to the angle, with the gluing of the layers being absolutely critical.  The table was turned in three pieces and then glued and clamped together – at 2m diameter it exceeded the size of our press so every clamp in the workshop had to be used to spread the load.  Finally, it was hand sanded and finished with a light oil which brought out the olive green and buttermilk colours of the tulipwood to full effect.
