Terence Conran commissioned sustainable designer, Sebastian Cox to create a workspace for his office.- a cocoon-like space to get away from it all where he could work without distractions. Making a piece of this size and complexity was a Herculean task within the timeframe but Seb rose to the challenge, taking the very specific brief and pushing back with ideas to ensure that the piece had something of him.

Highly motivated by the desire to find the most sustainable solution, Seb chose to work with red oak and cherry.  Red oak is the most commonly grown timber in North America but has the least market so there is massive surplus. The situation is similar with cherry – there is substantial volume but the market has dropped away because of fashion – not an easy outcome to predict or prepare for when planting 100 years in advance!  As a result, it is another underutilised timber.

One of the key features of this piece are the woven screens which was driven from Seb’s work of swill making, the traditional craft of weaving cleft oak. The open vascular structure of the red oak made it a good candidate for weaving.  Soaked for three weeks in the river that runs alongside the workshop, the oak became malleable.  The planks were then band sawed into strips ready for weaving.

The main cabinets, which are made from cherry, are a fine example of classical cabinet making – dove tail drawers, hinged doors, a sliding door and even a secret compartment for Terence to discover.
