At the start of July 2014, in partnership with the American Hardwood Council, ten diverse designs were tried, tested and crafted into beautifully made objects in our workshops as part of 'The Wish List' - an exciting project which paired ten world-leading creative minds with a younger generation of rising talent.
Terence Conran, co-founder of Benchmark, instigated the project when he wrote to his friends and asked, “What have you always wanted in your home, but never been able to find?” His friends are, of course, some of the most illustrious names in architecture and design. Paul Smith, Norman Foster, Amanda Levete, John Pawson, Alison Brooks, Zaha Hadid, Alex de Rijke, Richard and Ab Rogers, and Allen Jones all indicated what product they longed for. Under the mentorship of these ‘greats’ , young up-and-coming names designed the desired items. Such an open brief guaranteed an extraordinary spread of design with the challenge being to produce each project in just one week and in a single material – American hardwood, in celebration of the versatility of timber and the enormous variety that can be achieved with one material.
“This project is a collaborative fusion of design experience, young talent and craftsmanship . It is this spirit of open-mindedness and enthusiasm that keeps the Benchmark workshop a dynamic hub of creativity.” Sean Sutcliffe, co-founder of Benchmark
