Launching an open invitation on 19th May, Benchmark, widely regarded as the UK’s powerhouse of craft, joins with Fixperts, a worldwide platform mobilising the valuable creative and social resource of fixing. The partnership will establish the inaugural Fixperts Residency and Business Partnership Programme, which will commence at Benchmark’s workshops in West Berkshire in September.
Benchmark’s co-founder Sean Sutcliffe met with Daniel Charny, curator, educator, designer who co-founded Fixperts alongside James Carrigan, last year and the conversations began.  The Fixperts Residency is a year-long paid placement which opens up the doors to Benchmark’s extensive workshop, tools and knowledge of our master craftsmen, which will enable the Fixperts to move to its next stage of development.  The Residency is open to applicants who have graduated in the last 5 years in a relevant discipline (design, craft, engineering, art or other) and has competent making abilities.  The deadline for applicants is 3rd July.
Fixperts sets out to make an immediate difference to peoples’ lives by applying creative skills to solve problems; the Fixperts network and online platform is about sharing that knowledge and insight, and inspiring others to do the same. The programme harnesses the imagination and skills of the next generation to make with a purpose. Benchmark join them in promoting this way of thinking.
The FixResident will spend a year at Benchmark aligned to a master craftsman, and will apply themselves to making, repairing, or fixing for someone else.   Each FixProject will be developed with real people – our FixPartners, and the story of each fix captured on film and shared online.  Fixperts projects use the design process in a unique way, with a particular focus on learning, understanding and responding to the needs of others.
As a Business Partner, Benchmark will make available to the Fixperts Resident the 40,000 sq ft workshops for timber milling, cabinetmaking, veneering, spray shops, metalworking, and in-house upholstery, and on site design studio. Being able to draw from these resources, the creative resident will have access to a combination of traditional crafts skills and new technologies as they take on their problem solving challenges. It is a paid placement and incredible opportunity to be exposed to all aspects of the business, as well as engaging with fixing as valuable creative and social resource.
Benchmark care deeply about making and believe that sharing their knowledge, skills and facilities, the making of Fixperts projects will be enhanced. The company is keen to engage with and share their values with the future generation of designers and makers and be part of the force for change. Sean Sutcliffe believes that a Fixperts in the workshop will inspire their team and be a catalyst for idea generation and new ways of working.
The Benchmark Fixperts Residency, remunerated with a generous stipend, hopes to be the first of many, which will include Business Partners from world-class engineering companies, to producers of material, furniture and lighting. Fixperts is an open knowledge-sharing platform, identifying the power of fixing, and through social engagement identifying the positive impact of creativity. We need you.
