Exploring traditional methods of woodland management not only reveals an abundant and self-replenishing supply of material, but a plethora of skills and tools that are near forgotten too.  In this range we’ve harnessed sustainable crops of coppiced chestnut, well-managed ash and the ancient skill of cleaving – the controlled splitting of wood along its grain. We’ve combined these with contemporary furniture making techniques to create a collection with a simple and textural aesthetic.  This collection sits where traditional meets modern; honestly showing how the tree grew, how the pieces are constructed and how the hands of the craftsman made them.

Lath chair

This is our modern interpretation of the traditional ladder-back chair. The fine cleft laths that make the ladder-back are split from freshly coppiced chestnut and the frame is made from well-managed ash, CNC cut for accuracy. It is light, strong and bears the hand of its maker.  Available with two seat options: stretched veg-tan leather, or Danish cord.

Lath Bench & Coffee Table

Vegetable-tanned leather has been stretched over chestnut laths to create this lightweight and strong bench and table.  A smooth ash frame carries the skin-and-bone seating/table top. The more you use this piece, the more the leather will wear around the laths and the more it becomes yours.  Available with two upholstery options: stretched veg-tan leather, or Danish cord.

Shake Cabinet & Sideboard

This cabinet and sideboard have a solid dovetailed ash carcass and doors made from cleft chestnut shakes. These are skillfully split as thinly as possible to keep the doors light and full of texture.

Benchmark is a leading company of craftspeople and designers, founded 30 years ago by Terence Conran and Sean Sutcliffe. Based in West Berkshire on a converted farm, the team is now 50 strong in over 40,000 sq ft of workshops for timber milling, carpentry, veneering, spraying, specialist metalworking, and upholstery, as well as design studio and showroom. Benchmark work extensively with hotels, restaurants, public buildings, offices and private residences.

The company supports the well being of the local rural community, environmentally by the micro generation and recycling of waste to energy, economically and socially by operating a developed apprentice programme, with 90% of employees living within 15 miles.

Their love for making starts from the stewardship of trees, down to the hands-on making by their highly skilled team. Benchmark believes that the pleasure gained from using a product is directly related to the care given by the hand of the maker.

Benchmark’s metal workshop is one of the most specialist in the UK. Based on a very traditional skill set, of panel beating and manipulation, it is not something that can be replicated by machine. The knowledge has simply been passed through generations from father to son, to apprentice. In lieu of selecting standard profiles from a catalogue, Benchmark encourages specifiers to talk to the workshop to develop an individual piece.

Sebastian has been highly recognised for using the ancient technique of coppicing. By cutting and managing trees in this way provides an abundant source of timber, as well as creating a healthy and diverse woodland. He creates products that are simple in form, functional, unobtrusive, lightweight, and durable. His work also shows a strong connection with the making process through visible joints, and honest construction.
Manufacturing each piece by hand, his designs are mostly developed at the workbench rather than on a CAD program.
