Benchmark, the UK’s powerhouse of craft, returns to the Design Factory in the Farmiloe building for Clerkenwell Design Week. Here, we present the VICTORIA WORKDESK and ANGUS RISE AND FALL WORKSTATION, alongside a specially commissioned ENGLISH WALNUT TABLE and SHADES OF GREY TAMBOUR SCREEN, all pieces developed for a new work environment.
We are seeing a considerable shift in the sort of workplace that companies want to offer. Our clients are focusing on communal areas, engagement space, hot desking and stand-out pieces of furniture for places where people can come together and collaborate, forming a close-knit family rather than co-workers.  Our love of making, and our use of the best natural materials that have tactility and warmth results in furniture that has soul, spurring conversation, conviviality and the best creative problem solving.

The Victoria Workbench, at 4.8m, encourages social interaction and collaboration.  It is made from Scottish Elm with an inset central bronze panel for cable management and integrated removable reading lights, allowing for multi-use workspace one day, lunch space or meeting table another.

The Angus Rise & Fall desk, a fully automated workstation for two people, looks towards new directives for well-being at work.  The motorised system enables each user to adjust their desk height to sitting or standing levels. We’ve wrapped the top in saddle stitched veg tan leather, with a magnetised oak panel as a visual divider but it can be made in natural timber or any material of choice.

We are constantly searching and collecting interesting timber to make outstanding pieces furniture.  For Clerkenwell, we have sourced a log of English Walnut and used a matched pair of boards in combination with polished bronze legs.  We’ve left the edges wany and retained the knots and splits for a characterful piece that would be equally at home in a welcome area, as a meeting table or for lunch gatherings.

The Shades of Grey Tambour Screen, which is made from individual strips of oak, stained to create graduated tones, can be shaped to suit, creating a semi private area in an open space.

For the exhibition we’ve joined up with neighbours to our Dorset workshop, tea merchants Comins Tea who are lovely people that travel the world to source fine single estate tea. They believe in tea as a connector, a way to slow people and conversation down and encourage consideration and exchange of ideas.  We are inviting visitors to take time to have a cup of tea and to talk.  As the evening draws in, we will be cracking open the kegs from our local organic brewery Butts, and cooking up sausages, made from Sean’s own pigs, and serving Dorset oysters.

Aside from the main Benchmark stand, we’ve partnered with Fixperts to launch the first Fixperts Residency – an amazing opportunity for a graduate to spend a year-long paid placement in the workshop. Applications open from 19th May – find out more at the Fixperts Residency stand DF20.

Separate to the Design Factory, look out for our Ping Pong table in St James’ Church Gardens.  An increasingly popular accessory for the new office space, we have made several bespoke designs in the last year – this one is inspired by Italian Riva Yachts, made from cherry with walnut detailing.  We are encouraging everyone to photograph themselves playing and post on instagram or twitter to win a Puck Side Table @MadebyBenchmark #pingpongpuck
