Care guides

Care Instructions for Soap and Oiled Finishes

Soap Finish

Regular maintenance of soap treated wooden furniture is both easy and effective. You will achieve the best result by soap-treating the table approximately 2 weeks after having received itand then every 4-6 weeks depending on usage.

Everyday maintenance can be done by using a soft cloth wrung in clean warm water. Avoid using any cleaning detergents or any other sort of chemicals on the wood. Also, never use steel wool on the wood.

To re-soap your table, dissolve a cup of soap flakes in a litre of warm water.  Soak a cloth in the mixture, wring out and wash the table in the direction of the grain.  Remember to treat all edges and legs to avoid uneven drying.  After the first treatments, the fibres of the wood may rise. Should this occur, use some fine sandpaper to sand down the wood. Always sand in the direction of the grain of the wood. After having sanded down the surfaces, repeat the soap treatment process.

Oiled Finish

To clean on a daily basis simply wipe the surface with a damp cloth and then remove any moisture with a dry cloth.  Wipe off anything that will stain straight away, eg red wine, balsamic vinegar, oil, tea, coffee, alcohol, etc.

Occasionally spills may penetrate the oil and you may need to re-oil.  Make sure the area is dry. Lightly sand the stain along the grain with a fine grade sandpaper until you can no longer see the mark.  You will be removing a thin layer of the oil.  Blend in the edges of the stain by lightly sanding the surrounding area.  Apply a thin layer of oil (two teaspoons of oil should be enough to cover 1m2) to the sanded area on a soft cloth.  Concentrate on the sanded area and then blend in the edges by wiping the cloth across the surrounding area.  You may need to reapply the oil after 2 hours to provide a match with the existing finish.

Dents and scratches may be sanded out with sandpaper or steamed with heat from an iron applied on top of a damp cloth.  You will notice that it now feels slightly rough where the grain has come out.  Use fine grade sandpaper to lightly sand and ‘de-nib’ the grain.  The sanded area can then be treated as above.
