Care guides

Care instructions for Oiled Pieces

Our furniture is very easy to look after, and with a little care, will continue to look beautiful for future generations.  We use Osmo Polyx Oil, a hard wax oil, which keeps the timber looking and feeling as natural as possible whilst providing a level of protection against every day stains and spills.

The choice of oil depends upon the timber.  For oak we offer three choices of oil - a clear oil which gives a warm, honey tone, a white oil which keeps the oak looking natural and counters the natural darkening with age and raw oil which keeps the timber closes to its natural state. For ash, we offer just the white oil as clear oil tends to make it look a little yellow.  Walnut is only offered in clear oil which brings out its rich grain and colour.

The wax will be fully hardened after 4 weeks.  Particular care should be taken in the first few weeks after delivery.

To clean on a daily basis simply wipe the surface with a damp cloth and then remove any moisture with a dry cloth.  Wipe off anything that will stain straight away, eg red wine, balsamic vinegar, oil, tea, coffee, alcohol, etc.
Occasionally spills may penetrate the oil and you may need to re-oil.  Make sure the area is dry. Lightly sand the stain along the grain with a fine grade sandpaper until you can no longer see the mark.  You will be removing a thin layer of the wax oil.  Blend in the edges of the stain by lightly sanding the surrounding area.  Apply a thin layer of Osmo Polyx oil (two teaspoons of oil should be enough to cover 1m2) to the sanded area on a soft cloth.  Concentrate on the sanded area and then blend in the edges by wiping the cloth across the surrounding area.  You may need to reapply the oil after 2 hours to provide a match with the existing finish.

Dents and scratches may be sanded out with sandpaper or steamed with heat from an iron applied on top of a damp cloth.  You will notice that it now feels slightly rough where the grain has come out.  Use fine grade sandpaper to lightly sand and ‘de-nib’ the grain.  The sanded area can then be treated as above.
