Sustainability is, and always has been, at the heart of everything we do. We have continually made every effort to develop our business in a responsible and sustainable way, minimising the negative environmental impacts and contributing economically and socially to the well being of the rural community around us.
Our furniture is made from certified timbers which we try to source as locally as possible. We are exceptional among furniture makers in having Forest Stewardship Council ® (FSC®) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) chain of custody certification. Please ask for details of certification for specific products.
We are constantly improving the environmental performance of our manufacturing such as micro generation and recycling of waste to energy, as well as reducing and reusing wherever possible. We have been awarded ISO 14001 certification - the internationally recognised standard for the environmental management of businesses.
Our workshops are based on what was a disused farm which we have developed and restored.
By employing and training locals our workers can remain in their community spending money in local shops and not travelling long distances to work. The average mileage to work for our staff is 13 miles, with the average for apprentices, just seven miles.
In 2007, Benchmark was awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise in the Sustainable Development category, the first furniture maker to win this prestigious award.
